Digital Money & the Future

Dadi sketches three layers in her notebook:

• Payments — UPI and cards move rupees today.
• Bank savings — FDs and savings accounts give convenience and some interest.
• Hard money — gold and land store value over decades.

Each layer solves a different problem. Confusion starts when we expect one tool to do all three jobs.

The digital rupee (e₹) is a government-issued digital form of the same fiat rupee. It may improve payment rails — but it does not fix unlimited supply or inflation by itself.

Priya's questions pile up:

• If UPI is so good, why talk about Bitcoin?
• Can a phone wallet be frozen?
• What happens to savings if rupees are "just data"?

Dadi smiles — these are fair questions. Act II will explore a narrow but important idea: money no single authority can print more of.
